Abstract
Objective : The purpose of the study is to suggest the content and policy direction of housing services for people with a mental illness by surveying their needs.

Methods : We surveyed the needs of people with a mental illness regarding the housing services. The subjects were mentally disabled people who were using mental health facilities within the city of Seoul. The questionnaire consisted of personal information, daily life, housing services, and the independent living support service. The survey was conducted from July 2018 to August 2018, and 365 questionnaires were completed in 61 places.

Results : In the area regarding the personal information of the study, people aged 40 to 50 accounted for 60% of the entire subjects, of which the majority of people were unmarried (70.14%), and the primary guardians were mostly parents (37.26%). In the area of daily life, it was found that the people with a plan (67.12%) after checking out of their current facility was about twice that of people who do not have any plan (29.86%). The biggest reason for not having any plan for housing appeared to be due to not having any registered residence (46.79%). Finally, with regards to the area of independent living support service, those who have needs for independent living (75.34%) was significantly higher than those who do not (11.23%), and the biggest obstacle in planning the independent living was found to be economical difficulties (41.37%). Also, daily life (21.37%), health care (19.45%), housing support and housekeeping management (18.08%) showed similar outcomes in terms of the service required to support the independent living.

Conclusion : The current study examined individual factors related to housing services, environmental factors, social and institutional factors, and the future direction of mental health services. This ultimately suggests a policy direction to provide stable housing, economic support, and services tailored to the needs of the mentally disabled with a vulnerable supporting system.
